AAI National Intermediate & Veterans CC 2002. On Sunday 10th February, the National Intermediate and Veterans Cross-Country Championships took place in Stranorlar, Co. Donegal. On a very testing course with very soft underfoot conditions and a tough hill it was a great day for Mullingar Harriers' athletes. The long journey certainly proved worthwhile with the club coming home with eleven medals. Our Intermediate Women's team have trained consistently over the last number of months with this competition in mind, and on Sunday last they certainly got their reward with a stunning victory in the club competition, while also finishing second county. Caroline Harney has been in superb form throughout the cross-country season and on Sunday she had another excellent run finishing second. This was a great performance from a very dedicated athlete. Caroline was well supported by the ever-consistent Vera Flynn in 11th place, having a very good run. Ciara Dillon and Michelle O'Halloran followed in quick succession, both running strongly, ensuring a super victory. This was an excellent team performance from the girls and a most deserved victory. In the Intermediate Men's Race Patrick Muldoon recorded an outstanding victory. Always in contention from the start Patrick opened up a lead on the third lap and never looked back, going on to a very convincing victory. This was a first All-Ireland title for Patrick and is most deserved for a very dedicated athlete who has improved immensely over the last number of years. In the Veteran Women's Geraldine Walsh had another excellent run, finishing third in her category. Brigid McCabe also has a very good run, finishing well up. In the Veteran Men's race Pat Muldoon was our first athlete home, he was followed by Seán McMullin and Nicky McCabe. All three finished well up in their respective categories. Many thanks to the supporters who travelled.
