Celtic International Cross Country

Sunday 27th January 2002

ALSAA, Dublin Airport

Sunday 27th January was certainly meant to be a day to remember for our club as two of our most loyal and dedicated members had the honour of being selected to represent Ireland in the Celtic International Cross-Country Championships, on Sunday last at the ALSAA complex in Dublin Airport. The Celtic International pitted the Irish athletes against their Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish counterparts.Congratulations to both Caroline Harney and Pat Muldoon on their selection. Also selected were Mark Christie and Martin Fagan, both regular internationals. Unfortunately Mark had to withdraw, as he was suffering from the after effects of 'flu.

Conditions were testing for the athletes, it was very soft underfoot, and there was also a strong a strong wind, as the Irish athletes were pitted against their Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish counterparts. The mens junior race was superb with Ireland's Pat Muldoon and Martin Fagan battling all the way to the finish before Fagan got the better of his rival in the last few strides, with Northen Ireland's Edward McGinley, only losing contact in the last lap. Pat Muldoon was subsequently disqualified for being overageIn the Women's U23 race Caroline Harney ran very well to finish seventh, another very good performance from Caroline.
