As
with Crookstown-Millview the previous week a small group of the Club’s juvenile athletes made the short journey to the
Cushinstown AC Open Sports in Co. Meath on Sunday 26th April. Despite the weather forecast, there
was no rain to speak of and in fact we had some sun on and off, though the wind kept the jackets firmly closed up.
Liam O’Reilly really got into
the spirit of the open sports and tried his hand at no less than 4 events and came away with an impressive armful of trophies
with victories in the 100m and 800m and second place in
the high jump. He even tried the long jump though finished out of the prizes. And we all think he’s
a cross country runner!
Stephen Nea finished out of the prizes in
his 100m but used it as a warm-up for the 300m where he ran with real strength and confidence to finish first,
and followed this with the 800m only a few minutes later but the effects of his efforts over 300m showed
in the finish straight and he had to settle for second place, but was still delighted with his trophy. He
also gave the high jump a try but didn’t get among the prizes.
There was a trophy winning performance by
Aoife Darby too in the 80m where she won well
and is really showing great signs of a sprint talent.
Also taking part and enjoying the afternoon’s
sport despite not winning prizes were Holly Walsh who ran extremely well in
the 80m, Faye Walsh in 80m and 300m,
and Meabh McNulty in the 80m and 200m. Faye and Meabh came close to the prizes in the 300m and 200m but are more
suited to the longer endurance events and no doubt will be looking forward to the next competition.
