Athlone IT was the
venue for this 5km close to the start of the road race season. It was a windy and wet affair with proceedings commenced
by comedian, Tommy Tiernan.
It was a good race for the Mullingar contingent out in force on a tough course. Marshalling
seemed to be a bit of a problem as a few people went straight instead of turning at one roundabout. However, Tomas Navichas looked very strong only to be outsprinted by Wayne Reid from Athlone,
runner-up in the "Jealous Wall" duathlon back in early April. Tomas was still pleased with his performance
and 2nd place finish.
There looked to be a battle in store as Tom
McGrath and Ben Vaitkavichius came into the track for the
last 400m, but Tom showed excellent finishing power to take 3rd place, ahead of Ben in 4th.
Martin Lyons was next in for Mullingar, showing real improvement of
late finishing just ahead of Aidan Gorry, finishing well despite having taken
the wrong turn with a few others, and Maura Dervin also ran well for Mullingar.
