Connaught
Schools
Competing for Moate CC in the Connaught Schools at Athlone IT on Wednesday 13th May, Thomas Fagan ran superbly to win the intermediate
800m and 1500m, Arlene Coughlan was 3rd
in the intermediate 800m (and 4th in the 1,500m), and Aoife Hogan
(Moate) came 3rd in the senior 800m. Rachel Yorke
(Mercy Convent, Longford) came 2nd in the senior 200m (and 4th in the 800m).
Also
competing was Mairéad Sayeh (St. Joseph's College, Summerhill) who finished
3rd in a very tight finish in the junior 100m, the same result as for Aoife
Hogan (Longford) in the senior 100m, but as only two qualify from the sprints they miss
out on the All-Ireland by just one place.
Leinster Schools
Also
on Wednesday 13th, at day 1 of the Leinster Schools in Santry, Ciara Fogarty
(Loreto Mullingar) won the intermediate shot putt, Shane Fitzsimons
(St. Joseph’s, Rochfortbridge) won the junior 800m, and Elizabeth
Carr (St. Finian’s College, Mullingar) was second in the junior 800m.
Well done to Paul Collins (St. Finian’s and North Westmeath AC) who won the discus and was second in
the shot putt.
Also getting in the medals were Aaron Glynn (St. Joseph’s)
who finished 2nd in the minor 500m and Linda Conroy
(Mercy Convent, Kilbeggan) who won the minor 1,100m but there is no All-Ireland for the
minor age group.
Others who were unlucky not to get through were Thomas Lynn
(St. Finian’s), Lorraine Daly (Mercy, Kilbeggan), Ciara
Hewson (Maynooth PPS) and Liam O’Reilly (St. Joseph’s).
Jake Byrne (St. Joseph’s) spared
his efforts and did just enough to qualify in the 3,000m by finishing 2nd on day 2 of the
Leinster Schools on Saturday 16th at Santry where Adam Daly (St. Mary’s
CBS) and Vincent Connolly (Killucan) also competed well but don’t advance
to the All-Ireland Finals.
With 8 Club athletes qualifying, the Club will be well represented
at the All-Ireland Schools Track and Field Championships in Tullamore on 30th May and all 8 are very realistic medal
prospects.
