The weather
in Tullamore on Sunday 7th June for the Leinster Senior and Master Track and Field Championships
was hot and sunny and suited the sprinters and field event athletes particularly well. Having suffered broken ribs late last
year that made him miss the indoor season, followed by a series of niggling injuries over the past number of months that prevented
him competing until now, Greg Duggan finally got his outdoor season off to the
best possible start by winning the 200m and 100m in his master age-category.
A great return to competition after a very long lay off and he can now look forward to the season ahead with confidence.
For
Kevin Duggan, the after affects of a punishing post-graduate exam schedule took
its toll and he struggled to find his form in the senior 200m (4th in his heat, 6th overall on time) but later in the afternoon
made a much better showing in the 100m where he finished 4th, being denied a medal by a
photo decision, as his time equalled that of the third place finisher. While it’s tough competing knowing you’re
below par, he now knows that a few more weeks training and competition will blow away the last of the cobwebs.
Brendan Marshall was also feeling under par due to College commitments but he’s not
the National senior indoor long jump champion for nothing and he was still good enough to win the senior
long jump even though he said he didn’t jump terribly well, but he sets himself very high standards,
and a win is a win and a great confidence boost.
