Under a blistering sun, the Leinster Track & Field Championships
for under 12 and 13 took place on Saturday 13th June in Navan and there were mixed fortunes for the small contingent
from Mullingar that competed.
Cormac Dalton put down a clear marker
in the heats of the 600m under 12 by winning comfortably and qualifying for the final, but unlucky for
Kevin Giles in the other heat where he missed qualification by just one place.
Cormac looked very relaxed and was running comfortably at the bell in the final, and when
he went to the front at 400m he never looked back and pulled away very strongly to win and
add the outdoor Leinster title to the indoor title he won back in late February.
Oisin
Quinn and Glen Gaffney qualified from their heats of the 600m
under 13 but Eoin Sheridan and newcomer Mervyn
Harris were unlucky not to advance to the final despite giving it all their efforts and running well. In
the final Oisin had to work hard to stay in touch with the leaders but was rewarded for
his hard work with a bronze medal and he qualifies for the National Finals. However, Glen
was clearly hampered by a leg injury and despite a brave effort he was obviously disappointed to have to settle
for 6th.
Eoin and Mervyn
also competed in the 80m sprint under 13 but didn't advance to the final from the extremely competitive
heats but were still pleased with their races, while Eoin also competed in the shot
putt where he finished a very respectable 7th. Overall, good solid performances, some medals,
some disappointments, but the Mullingar athletes can be proud that they took part with distinction in what are probably
the most competitive Regional underage Championships in the Country. Many thanks to the parents for providing transport
and much needed and appreciated vocal support.
