Updated 20th July
It seems a given of late that where there’s a
road race, you’ll find a group from Mullingar among the competitors, so no exception on Saturday 18th July
for the big Adidas/Irish Runner 5 mile road race in the Phoenix Park, which was the first of a series of
races building up to the Dublin City Marathon in October. With over 5,000 taking part, the Mullingar athletes knew they’d
have to work hard to get noticed in the huge crowd, but that’s precisely what they did.
Martin Lyons was first in for Mullingar
in 28:11 to finish a magnificent 34th overall in the huge crowd, just having the edge in a sprint finish with Maurice Looby who finished in 28:14, which was good enough for 5th in his age-category. Close
behind was Paddy Kelly (28:31), followed by Matt
Glennon (28:59 and 7th in category), then Mary Scully having
a terrific race to finish in 30:52 and win her category, followed by Adam Daly
(4th junior man), Pat Muldoon Senior (4th in category), John
Bannon (5th in category), Eva Ross (18th in category), Christy Creagh who also won his age-category, and Sean McMullin,
proving in addition to being a notable race-walker is a fine runner too, finishing 3rd runner in his category.
These are outstanding results in such a crowded event, and congratulations to our senior Mullingar athletes for continuing
their fine string of great performances on the road race circuit.
