Great turn-out for first round of
Westmeath Cross Country Championships

Numbers were well up on last year for the first round of the Westmeath Cross Country Championships held in Belvedere on Sunday 4th October. Conditions were ideal for participants and spectators alike with firm dry underfoot conditions and a clear dry calm and bright morning.

Round One was for boys and girls under 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 years of age. Competitors came from the four corners of the County and included a number of newcomers that must have got a taste for cross country running in the recent Westmeath Schools Cross Country Championships held at the same Belvedere venue.

As expected, there were some very good individual performances but Championship cross country running is also about team running, so everyone’s performance was closely watched by Club officials, especially the newcomers. Based on the results of Round One and Round Two next week, teams to represent the Club and Westmeath in the upcoming Leinster Championships will be selected and it looks like we’ll be fielding some very strong teams.

It was particularly good to see so many senior and master athletes running with the under 18 boys and girls in a non-Championship race that acted as a warm-up race for Round 2 next week.

Thanks to all who helped on the day recording the results and stewarding on the course and to the many parents who came and supported the competitors, among them Louis Kenny, a star in his day with a 2:12 marathon, home from the USA and taking time out to see the stars of the future in action. It was great to see Louis again and welcome him home.

The results of Round 1 are:
