We had an impressive squad of 54 of the Club’s younger athletes competing
for Westmeath on Friday evening 18th May in Tullamore at the Annual Inter-County T&F Meeting between
Laois, Offaly and Westmeath. For some of the very young ones, this was their first track competition and their first time
to compete on an Olympic-standard tartan track, which added to their enjoyment of the evening. The competition was for boys
and girls from under 9 years to 14 years.
We had athletes in every age group and in every event – sprint,
middle distance, long jump, ball throw and shot putt. There were so many competing in so many different events in different
places throughout the stadium, that it was hard to keep track of them all and their results, so let’s hope we haven’t
left anyone’s name out!
Among the medal winners were Alison Bane, Adam Bate,
Alanna Bate, Andrew Daly, Aoife Darby, Enda Gaffney, Eoghan Gallagher, Susan
Glennon, Nicola Groenewald, Max Gunning, Jack Hayes, Mark Langtry, Patrick Leydon, Shauna Leydon,
Jessica Maloney, Conor McHugh, Meabh McNulty, Aoife O’Brien, Eoin Quinn, Andrew Shaw, Mark
Shaw and Francesca Walsh. In fact, many of them won more than one medal.
Also competing well for Westmeath
and reaching finals were Blossom Agbana, Stephanie Agbana, Yusuf Ahmed, Harrison
Badger, Peter Bane, Andrea Brady, Lauren Connolly, Katie Daly, Rachel Darby, Jorge De La Huz, Brian
Gaffney, Caoimhe Gaffney, Laura Gaffney, Elaine Gallagher, Sarah Glennon, Leo Gunning, Caitriona Kennedy, Thomas Kennedy,
Georgia Lynch, Paul Óg McCool, Jade McNamee, Megan McNamee, Alisha Martin, Mikey Moffett, Ryan Mowanda, Sinead Murtagh,
Caoimhe O’Brien, Shauna O’Brien, Richard Popoola, Maria Quinn, Niamh Quinn and Diego
Tirado.
Well done to all our young athletes for competing so well for Westmeath and a special thanks
to the many parents for giving a helping hand on the night and to the many parents who provided transport and vocal support.
