MULLINGAR ROAD LEAGUE

May 2008

Great Start to the Road League on 7th May

A traffic-free course in a beautiful woodland setting makes the Mullingar Road League a unique running experience.

The 2008 League got off top a great start on 7th May when 260 runners, joggers and walkers set off on the 5km course around the scenic Earl's Trail in Belvedere, on the shore of Lough Ennell. It was a beautiful warm sunny evening, ideal for athletes and spectators alike.

First man home was Paul Buckley of Ferbane AC in 15:57, which is a fast time for the challenging Belvedere course. Paul was followed home by Declan Fahy of Tullamore Harriers (16:06) with first local man next, Tomas Navickas of Mullingar Harriers (16:12). In the ladie's race, first to finish was Tullamore's Pauline Curley (17:23), well clear of second place Mullingar Harriers' Mary Scully (19:04) and third place Wendy Bates(20:25) also from Mullingar Harriers. First junior man was Shane Fitzsimons (18:07) of Mullingar Harriers who used the race as a training session. First junior lady was Rachel Thomson (22:18).

Apart from the "elite" runners, there were very many not so elite, fun runners, joggers and walkers, which added to the occasion. Special mention to the oldest competitor, 82 year old Moss (Tomas) Fagan who was one of Westmeath's best athletes in the 1940s and 1950s. Great to see him still so active after all these years. At the other age of the age-spectrum, 10 year old Emma Glynn thoroughly enjoyed the pleasant run through the woods proving that even a youngster can run 5km if they pace themselves properly.

Many thanks to the Management and Staff of Belvedere House, Gardens & Park for making the grounds available for the race, and to Westmeath Civil Defence for providing first aid cover, and of course to all those who took part.

Entries will be taken on any of the subsequent evenings (May 14th, 21st, 28th). The entry fee is €15, which covers the entire series and includes a specially commissioned commemorative T-shirt.

There will be a presentation ceremony after the final event on May 28th with lots of category and spot prizes to be won. The overall winners of the race (first man & first woman) will receive the Pat Finnerty Perpetual Trophy to commemorate Pat Finnerty (R.I.P.), past Chairperson of Mullingar Harriers, who gave great service to the Club over many years.

Keep fit with the Mullingar Road League during May!

We are all aware of the benefits of exercise and participation in sport and judging from the fantastic response received from the people of Westmeath and the midlands in recent weeks, it is expected that large numbers will participate in the  2008 Mullingar Road League in Belvedere House, Gardens & Park, Mullingar on the Wednesday evenings in May at 8pm

What is it about?

The aim of the Mullingar Road League is to promote participation in sport and physical activity. Fully endorsed by the Irish Sports Council, the League caters for runners, joggers and walkers of all ages and abilities. The organisers are encouraging as many as possible to take part. It is ideal preparation for ladies who are participating in the forthcoming Women’s Mini-Marathon

Last year the Mullingar Road League was a great success when it took place on the same course with over 300 runners taking part on each of the nights. Enquiries for this year’s event have been coming in thick and fast and the organisers are hoping that this will be reflected in the turnout. The Organising Committee are appealing to the people of Westmeath and the Midlands to support this event, it is a great fun and social way to participate in sport and explore the beauty of one of our finest visitor attractions simultaneously. So why not come to Belvedere House, Gardens & Park on the Wednesday evenings of May, you will not be disappointed!
