A small group of older juvenile
sprinters from Mullingar competed at the Scottish Indoor Championships at Kelvin Hall, Glasgow on Sunday 10th February.
Diarmaid Hyland came safely through his
heat of the 60m where he finished 2nd but he didn’t advance from the ultra-competitive semi-finals. In his 200m heat,
he ran very well for his first time running the tight bends of an indoor 200m and finished 3rd, but with only the winner
of each of the 5 heats guaranteed a place in the semi-finals, he didn’t advance further. Diarmaid is under-age
again next year and gained a huge amount from the experience, and this will stand to him in future indoor events.
Louise Darby is no stranger to competing
indoors and used the 60m as a warm-up for the 200m, but such was the very competitive standard that despite a very good race
in her 200m heat, she failed to advance to the semi-finals but was very pleased to have competed in Scotland.
Poor (blond) Aoife Hogan
had to sit out the Championships due to injury, but provided great support to the small Mullingar contingent.
Overall, it was an extremely valuable
experience for the Mullingar sprinters and feed-back was so positive that a return trip to Glasgow will likely feature in the Club’s fixture list for 2009.
