World Cross Country Championships

23rd/24th March 2002,

Leopardstown Racecourse, Dublin

Last weekend, Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th March, was a great occasion in Irish athletics as the country hosted the World Cross-Country Championships in Leopardstown Racecourse, Dublin. A very large Mullingar contingent travelled to witness some very exciting races. It was a particularly special day on Sunday for two of our club members, Mark Christie and John Burke, who had the honour of representing Ireland at the championships. Mark had an excellent run in the Junior Men’s race and was the first Irish scorer. It was a fitting way to bring a super cross-country season to a close. John Burke was part of the Senior Men’s Long Course team, and he also had a very good run, in a race totally dominated by the Africans. Well done to both Mark and John.

Also congratulations to Damien Shaw who had a very good run in the Schools International Cross Country in Wales, where he finished 8th. It has been an unbelievable first few months in athletics for Damien.
